The town of Artajona is located in the central part of the Foral Community of Navarra, in the so-called Middle Zone. Its municipal term has a surface area of 67.14 km² and limits to the north with Añorbe and Obanos; to the east with Barásoain, Garínoain and Pueyo; to the west with Mendigorría and Larraga; and to the south with Tafalla and Larraga. Municipality of the Foral Community of Navarra, located in the merindad of Olite, in the Tafalla region and 31 km from the capital of the community, Pamplona. Its population is currently 1741 people, with a density of 25.93 inhabitants per km2.
The southernmost dolmen group in Navarra is located in its municipal area. It includes two monumental dolmens (Portillo de Enériz and the Farangortea Mine). Of a spectacular construction, they show wide gallery tombs with a separation slab (or “window”) located in the middle of mounds of more than 20 m in diameter by 2.5 m in height. In other terms, such as Aguarroya, Andiuz, Artadía, Cercondoa, Chirriturría, Landerdoya and Saragoría, there are also Eneolithic and Bronze Age sites. There are also vestiges of towns from the Iron Age such as Dorre, Gasteluzar and Guencelaya, where an altar decorated with a bull's head was found. An archaeological intervention confirmed the existence of a Roman settlement dated between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The absence of archaeological strata and structures from the late Roman, late-Ancient, and early-Medieval times indicates that this space was abandoned until the middle centuries of the Middle Ages.

In the year 1085 the fortress began to be built by the canons of Saint Sernin de Toulouse and finished in 1109, due to its strategic location it suffered many battles for its control and was rebuilt several times, especially in the fourteenth century during the reign of Carlos II the Bad. The medieval weekend is very famous: it takes place in September; it shows the crafts and culture of the municipality.
